The Cyclist (for Gui)
Type of project
Design drawing (pencil, watercolor, gouache, ink)
Date
2023
Location
Borgerhout, Antwerp
One of the design sketches I made during the creation of the automaton 'The Cyclist (for Gui)'.
A dramatic story underlies this creation. One of the bar buddies—without exception the most athletic of us all—drove his racing bike into a ravine, broke his vertebrae, and turned out to be almost completely paralyzed. That touched me so deeply that even then I thought: let me make an automaton so that he can at least keep cycling.
A few days later, he passed away. I kept my word, as a tribute.
